Answer:
The late Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah was a tireless savant of Islam, whose passion and dedication to Islamic scholarship should serve as a model of inspiration for all students and scholars of Islam; in this he reminds us of those extinct species of great Islamic scholars of the past whose proud achievements fill the pages of numerous encyclopedic biographical dictionaries treasured in Arabic.
Dr. Hamiduallah was born in Hydarabad in 1908; he studied at the famous Nizamiyyah University of Hydarabad, and later earned doctorates from the Universities of Bonn and Sorbonne. He settled down in Paris, France, as a researcher, but later moved to the United States in 1996. He died in December 17, 2002 at the age of 94 in Jacksonville, Florida, USA.
Dr. Hamidullah’s passion for knowledge was boundless; he mastered over two dozen languages, and authored around 100 works. His most famous works include the following: Introduction to Islam, Muslim conduct of State; The Emergence of Islam; all of the three works are available in English. But some of his more substantial works such as his Biography of Prophet, peace be upon him, as well as his translation of the Qur’an are in French. His treatise on the constitution of Madinah was a pioneering work in the field of Seerah.
Dr. Hamidullah lived a life-long bachelor, and led a simple life; he renounced the comforts of the mundane world in his pursuit of knowledge. May Allah shower His choicest blessings on Dr. Hamidullah. May the Beneficent Lord unite us all with him in the company of prophets, siddiqin (the truthful) and the righteous in the next world-- Aameen.
