I commend you for your zeal to spread the message of mercy to all people. May Allah grant you the best of rewards for all of your efforts and inspire you to be steadfast on the path of rectitude in words, deeds and behavior. It is apt to remind ourselves that there is nothing more rewarding for us than guiding people to the straight path. The Prophet, peace be upon him, told his cousin Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, “If a single person were guided aright through your efforts that would be better for you than having all of the worldly wealth in your possession!”

Now coming to your query in regards to translating the verses of the Qura’n in this way, it is my humble opinion that your brother is right in insisting that you should refrain from it. For the simple fact that it is highly risky as you may misrepresent the meanings of the Glorious Qur’an, the infallible speech of Allah. So although you are allowed to translate other materials and articles, when it comes to verses of the Qur’an and the texts of the Prophet’s hadith, you should simply rely on reputable translation of the Qur’an in Danish; I would assume that they are available. As for the Qur’an and the traditions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, they cannot be rendered into another language except by someone who is not only proficient in both languages, but must also be familiar with the Qur’anic sciences and tafsir literature. Therefore, we cannot take liberties in translating them; for that would amount to distorting them. But as far as other expository texts or articles on Islam, you may be allowed to take some liberties.

We may do well to reflect on the words of the Prophet, peace be upon him, “Whosoever interprets the Qur’an by his own personal opinion, let him find his abode in hell-fire.” Abu Bakr, in spite of his deep mastery of Arabic language, and of Islam used to say, “Which heaven will shelter me, and which earth will hold me, if I were to explain the Qur’an based on my own personal opinion!” Hence we must resist the temptation of treating the Qur’an except with utmost reverence. May Allah fill our hearts with due reverence for the Glorious Book and may He illuminate our hearts with it, and may it serve as a light for us in this world and the next—aameen.
