There were two eminent companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, who were known by the name of Suhayl. The first one was Suhayl b. Bayda or Suhaly b.Wahb b. Rabi’ah, one of the pioneer Muslims, who was in the first batch of immigrants to Abbysinia. He died in Madina, and as Aishah, the beloved wife of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “The Prophet, peace be upon him, performed the janazah (funeral prayer)of Suhayl b. Bayda inside the precincts of the mosque.” The second was Suhyal b. Amr, who was one of the chieftains of Quraysh, and their prominent orator and presenter. Though a late comer to Islam, he became a zealous defender of Islam, and was known for his unbounded zeal to acquire knowledge, as well as his keen desire to catch up what he had missed by his previous stance against Islam and the Prophet, peace be upon him. In the later parts of his life, therefore, he became wholly occupied with the reading of the Qur’an and prayer. He died as a martyr fighting for the cause of Islam. May Allah be pleased with both of these great companions, and may He implant in our hearts deep love for Allah and His Messenger, and his family and companions, and honor us all to join their auspicious company after death-aameen.
