My question I have asked before; however, it was not answered. Are we allowed to recycle Islamic books?  Some books are over 40 years old and ripped due to wear and tear; some contain Qur’anic verses in Arabic. How are we supposed to handle these books?  What do we do with the Quran? I have no children. When I die, what will happen to these books? Someone may throw something in the garbage. What should I do?

Answer:

If these books are Qur’ans or valuable collections of Islamic literature, or general knowledge, and they can be repaired and used, then you need not worry about disposing them of; you could donate them all to the Library of the Islamic Institute of Toronto while you are alive or after your death. You may leave a will to that effect. By doing this, you will continue to reap rewards of a sadaqah jariyah (ongoing charity) as long as they are available for people to benefit from. If, however, they are not valuable, or they are beyond repair and re-use, then you need to shred them before disposing them off in the trash can, especially if they contain verses/texts from the Qur’an and hadith. If you don’t’ have access to a shredder, then the next best thing to do is to use scissors to cut them in such a way that the Quranic verses/texts are unrecognizable; and then you can place them in recycling boxes. In this way you have discharged your obligation. May Allah instill in our hearts love for His word and give us the honor of reverencing it always—aameen.
