We are expecting our first child in November. If it’s a boy we want to name him Adhaan. Is there any objection naming your son Adhaan in Islam?

Answer:

You are best advised to avoid this name; for adhaan is a symbol of Islam; it is the call to prayer; it is not good to call anyone by this name, for it may not be conducive to the spirit of reverence we should cherish towards the symbols of Allah. While naming children, we may do well to take into account the following considerations: 1. Choose a name that is inspiring and motivational: You may choose names of Prophets or companions or great personalities in Islam. By choosing such names, you may inspire your children to role model themselves after them. You may also choose any other name with a good meaning. 2. You should always avoid names that have pagan associations, or meanings that are objectionable or unpalatable from an Islamic perspective. Let me suggest a few names: Abdullah, Abdul Rahmaan, Abdul Raheem, Ahmad, Salman, Suhayb, Bilal, Yasir, Faheem, Sahl, Umar, Ali, etc. For more, you may consult a good book on Islamic names, or seek the advice of a knowledgeable person in your community.
