I'm fasting; I take my birth control pills at 2pm everyday; I do this without drinking water as the pill is very tiny, so I just swallow it; is this ok to do while fasting? I 'm a born muslim my husband is a covert; I live with my in-laws who are Hindus; they cook for us because we both work full-time they don't cook halal meat, is it ok to eat the meat they cook after I break my fast? Please answer as soon as possible, as I'm fasting and I need to know what's right?

Answer:

You are not supposed to take birth control pills until you break your fast. Sun does not set at 2 pm; by doing so you have invalidated your fast and you need to make up for them. This is the standard ruling in fiqh; but if you did this in ignorance, as it seems to me the case, according to some jurists, you need not worry about the past, but in future you must not take your pills until you break your fast. If you do so, you would be committing a sin and you would have no choice but to make up for them later.

As for the food they cook you can eat without any reservation if they cook vegetarian meals. If, on the other hand, they cook meat, you may eat meat (provided it is other than pork and its by-products) it if it has been bought in the supermarket here in North America--only if you have no other options; unless, of course, they have bought the meat marked as halal. A better way of dealing with the situation would be to offer to get the meat for them; in this way you can make sure that you eat only halal.
