Your answer to question #1222 clarifies the issue that an Imam, or an ndividual offering prayers alone can hold the Quran and pray from it in taraaweeh. However, while in congregation, is it permissible for a person other than the Imam to hold the Quran and read from it exactly what the Imam is reciting in taraaweeh? I have seen some women do this in the mosque and would like to know if this is allowed.

Answer:

The answer referred to above is intended as an exception or allowance limited only to those are leading taraaweeh or nafl prayers, or those who are appointed to correct them, or individuals who are praying by themselves, and have not retained much of the Qur’an. In other words, we are not allowed to generalize the rule to include those who are praying behind the imam in general. In such a case, it is considered definitely undesirable, if not entirely forbidden to do so.

In other words, it is not at all recommended for those who are praying behind the imam to hold the Qur’an and follow the recitation of the Imam.  This action, as a number of scholars, both of the past and present, have clearly pointed out, is definitely undesirable, and should never be encouraged. First of all, there is absolutely no precedent for it in the practice of the pious predecessors. Secondly, it entails activities extraneous to salah. It is worth remembering that according to Imam Abu Hanifah, such activities could even render one’s salah entirely null and void. Thirdly, it prevents a person from performing some of the recommended or desirable actions associated with salah such as looking at the place of prostration, and keeping hands rested above or below his/her navel, etc. It is, therefore, easy to conclude that one should not hold the Qur’an while praying behind the Imam; rather he/she should listen to the recitation directly from the mouth of the imam without being distracted by turning over pages and keeping the mushaf secure, etc.
