According to the explicit teaching of the Qur’an, protection of places of worship is one of the stated goals of Islamic struggle (jihad). It is therefore not difficult to conclude from this that Muslims are allowed to contribute towards maintenance of such places. Historically also, Muslim rulers have helped preserve and maintain places of worship of non-Muslims, although at times, they have also violated the above principle. We cannot, however, consider the latter as the norm.
