Answer:

It is permissible to read the Quran from Mushaf, especially in taraweeh or nafl (supererogatory) prayers, if a person does not memorize the Qur’an. We have precedents for this in the practices of salaf (pious predecessors). We read in Bukhari that the Prophet’s wife Aishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who was an outstanding scholar and jurist, ordered her freed slave Dhakwaan to lead her and a group of women in Taraweeh. While leading them, he was holding the Qur’an and reading from it. Imam Zuhri, a successor, and one of the reputed scholars of the third generation was asked about reading from Mushaf in taraweeh prayer, he said, “The best ones among us were in the habit of doing it!” Based on such precedents, it is considered acceptable in both Shafi and Hanbali schools, to read from the Mushaf while praying taraweeh. This was also the view of great scholars and jurists of salaf such as Ata and Yahya b. Sa’eed al-Ansari, etc. In conclusion: You are allowed to read from the Qur’an while praying taraweeh at home.
