IJAAZAH FAQ

IJAAZAH IN ARABIC AND ISLAMIC STUDIES

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Is proficiency in Arabic Language a pre-requisite for registering in the Ijaazah program?
Any student can register in the Ijaazah program and begin to take courses even if he/she does not know Arabic. Students must however strive to complete the three Madinah books within the first two years of the Ijaazah program. Students who have completed two of the Madinah books, or are at a higher level in the Language may register for the Jami ad-Duroos al Arabiyyah course. One does not need to know Arabic in order to take any of the courses in the first two years of the program. From year three on, inshaAllah the medium of instruction will be Arabic as the texts will be studied in Arabic.

  • You have listed ten courses for Year 1 of the program, but are only offering eight courses. When will the other courses be offered?
Hifz and Tajweed will be offered during the month of Ramadan (and the specific Suras for memorization will be given in advance so that students can commence memorization) and Fiqh al-Sirah will be offered during the summer months, inshaAllah.

  • What is the minimum number of courses I can take in any given semester?
Ideally one should take all of the Courses in any given semester. However, we recognize that this is not easily achievable. You are advised to take as many courses as possible, including one Arabic course. You can make up for the remaining courses during the next year.

  • Can I take a course listed in the Ijaazah program without registering for the Ijaazah Program?
Certainly. Each course can be an independent unit of study and students are encouraged to register for these courses even if they have no interest in registering for the Ijaazah Program.

  • If I were to take as many courses as I am able to, my fees will be quite substantial. Are there any discounts in fees for someone who take a certain number of courses?
There are substantial discounts for someone who has registered in the Ijaazah Program and will be taking more than one course. There is an automatic 15% discount for any subsequent course taken by a student. In addition, there are discounts for family members, students, group registrations etc. If the student is still in need of financial assistance, the IIT will be willing to work out a mutually acceptable format for tuition.

  • Are there any course materials that I will need to purchase for commencement of my studies?
Most course material will be provided at the start of the semester. The book Jami ad-Duroos Lughatul Arabiyyah has been ordered and will be available at the start of the program. Other texts mentioned, such as al-Muwatta of Imam Malik and Ihya Uloom ad-Deen are available for download from the following sites, as well as for purchase from local bookstores:

    Two other texts are required:
    1. Message of the Quran Muhammad Asads translation of the Quran, published by the Book Foundation () for students registering in the Aqidah in the Quran Course.
    2. Thematic Commentary of the Quran by Muhammad al-Ghazali, translated by A. Shamis for students registering in the Tafseer of Suratul Baqarah Course.

Both of these books are available from local bookstores or from

  • At the end of my studies, will I get a degree that is recognized by any educational institution?
The IIT will strive to get legislative approval locally as a degree granting institution, as well as accreditation from major Islamic Universities in the Muslim world. This is a lengthy process. The IIT will confer an Ijaazah at the successful completion of the program, and any other legally recognized credentials that is appropriate at that time.
